The 1990s spawned a new variety of crooks called identity thieves. Their stock in trade are your everyday transactions. Each transaction requires you to share personal information: your bank and credit card account numb stanley thermos ers; your income; your Social Security number; and your name, address stanley quencher and phone numbers. An identity thief takes some piece of your personal information and uses it without your knowledge to commit fraud or theft. The U.S. Congress asked the Federal Trade Commission FTC to provide information to consumers about identity theft and to take complaints from those whose identities have been stolen. The FTC is the federal clearinghouse for complaints by victims of identity theft. Although the FTC does not have the authority to bring criminal cases, they assist victims of identity theft by providing them with information to help them resolve the financial and other problems that can result from identity theft. The following information is provided by the FTC.Here are some ways that identity thieves work:They open a new credit card account, using your name, date of birth, and Social Security number. When Japan Hayabusa spacecraft photographed the asteroid Itokawa in 2005, scientists were puzzled by what they saw: The total volume of boulders strewn about its surface were greater than the volume of the craters they were supposed to have come from. Now physicists have an answer 8230; by studying the movement of nuts. It called the Brazil nut effect, named after the anecdotal observation that whenever you vertically shake a jar full of nuts, the largest ones always end up on top. Esther Inglis-Arkell has previously written about this complex phenomenon, but the abridged version is that when there are only a few large particles 鈥?and all are of equal density 鈥?shaking creates spaces beneath the large particl vaso stanley es that small ones can fall into. This has the effect of making the large particles rise. The Brazil Nut Effect: Why the biggest nuts rise to the top As the Physics arXiv Blog reports, a new study published by a research team stanley cup led by Soko Matsumura at the University of Dundee speculates that collisions between asteroids create vibrations that cause large boulders to rise to the surface, like B stanley termosy razil nuts. But can that same dynamic occur under low-gravity conditions. To find out, the scientists conducted simulations by filling a contained with 1,800 small particles, plus one large one, three-times bigger, at the bottom: They simulated the gravity of Earth, the Moon and several asteroids including Eros and Itokawa. and they show that if th

In a remote stretch of the Amazon rainforest, a skinny steel tower will soon rise over 1,000 feet into the sky鈥?stanley fr higher than the Eiffel Tower, way higher than the trees. The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory is a joint effort by Brazil and Germany to figure out exactly how carbon dioxide fluctuates inside the South American rainforest, one of the green lungs of the planet. In recent decades, the proportion of carbon dioxide in the Earth atmosphere as a whole has increased dramatically. Plants, however, need carbon dioxide to grow, and the dense vegetation of the Amazon rainforest has vast quantities of CO2 locked up inside it. The tower will help scientists measure how much carbon dioxide the rainforest absorbs year by year鈥攐r how much it releases. Scientists aren ;t entirely sure, hence the need for this tower. To that end, the structure will be replete with high-tech instruments monitoring air chemistry. But why does it need to be so ridiculously tall While shorter towers can measure how a local patch of rainforest breathes, this 1,000-foot tower will reach far past the trees, giving an overview of the entire eastern Amazon. Construction workers just recently b stanley thermos mug roke ground after several years of delays and red tape. Saying he was mad as hell, Gov. Jim Hodges fired South Carolina s prisons director Thursday after two guards were charged with allowing inmates to have sex at the governor s residence. The new charges deepened a prison sex scandal that has already involved convicted child killer Susan Smith. I ve lost confidence in the leadership of the agency, Hodges said in firing Corrections Department Director Doug Catoe. I am mad as hell, for the sanctity of my home has been violated, he said. We re shocked, disgusted, furious, Hodges spokesman Morton Brilliant said earlier. On Wednesday, Richland County chief prosecutor Barney Giese said two prison guards were charged with allowing inmates to have sex at the stanley website Governor s Mansion complex and at the governor s temporary residence in a Columbia neighborhood. Catoe, a 28-year veteran of the Corrections Department, was not at the department offices Thursday and would have no comment on Hodges action, stanley becher prisons spokesman John Barkley said. He was appointed to the $122,404-a-year job by then-Gov. David Beasley in December 1998. Hodges reappointed Catoe to the job after taking office in 1999. Wednesday s charges involved four minimum-security inmates who worked at the governor s mansion complex and temporary residence, handling maintenance, house stanley mug cleaning and cooking. According to an affidavit, guard Freddie Priester left his post at the temporary residence while inmates Nancy Mulwee and Antoine Frazier had sex.
